914-4 project for Ed Mettelman. In Ed's words:
"Over the last 15 years I have owned and raced a variety of sports cars, most of which were Porsches. I began with a 1974 914-4 that was both a concourse winner and an autocross/track car. Though it was not very powerful, it was a delight to drive. Some told me it was the perfect car to learn on - underpowered yet perfectly balanced and it required driver skill to be competitive. From there I graduated to a nicely prepared 914-6 vintage race car. More power, better safety equipment - a more appropriate multipurpose track car. Desiring a “true” race car, I found a piece of Porsche history – the “Max Moritz/ Ralph Meany” 914-6 GT. As a dedicated race car with a distinguished history, this car was welcomed at all vintage events. Not satisfied with its performance (do you see the pattern here?), I sought and found another piece of Porsche history. This time it was a purebred, purpose-built Porsche 906. Fast, agile and rare, this car is considered by many to be one of Porsche’s finest race cars. After barely avoiding what could have been a disastrous accident, I realized that I could have easily destroyed an important piece of history, not to mention my own health. Soon thereafter the 906 was sold.
After some reflection I thought about what a friend had told me years ago "… its just as much fun to drive a slow car fast as it is to drive a fast car fast”. I remembered how much fun it was driving that 914-4. I came to the realization that I could have fun and be competitive if I found or built a 914-4 and raced it in the appropriate class. SVRA’s Group 3 was exactly what I wanted, a class made up of small-bore production cars from the same era.
I found a decent 914 on Ebay and brought it to Rick as the basis for the best 914-4 race car we could build. The concept was simple ... use my 15 years of driving experience and Rick's vast 914 experience to build the best 914 in existence and do it within the vintage racing rules and regulations."
